First Gold is a dwarf hop first bred at Wye College, released in 1996 by Horticulture Research International (HRI) after extensive farm trials in 1995. It is a cross of hedgerow male and WGV (Whitbread Golding Variety) and is wilt tolerant and has good storage stability.

First Gold has a very attractive and distinct aroma with orange, spicy, fruity and marmalade notes, which some liken to Goldings but with a higher Alpha content. You can also sometimes get sweet aromas of geranium and magnolia, making this is floral hop variety as well as mightily bold with fruit.

A great dual purpose hop, First Gold is suitable both as a general kettle hop and also for late and dry hopping in all types of beer. Much of the flavour of WGV seems to have been retained but with an added extra citrus quality, which means First Gold produces a well-balanced bitterness and a fruity and slightly spicy note in ales.
